Mount Hyjal is a weird place. It’s a massive, sprawling zone with some of the most iconic lore in World of Warcraft history, but if you didn't play during Cataclysm, finding your way around feels like a chore. You're probably looking for the Firelands raid. Maybe you're hunting for the Pureblood Fire Hawk mount from Ragnaros, or maybe you just want those flashy transmog sets. Whatever the reason, you're headed to the Sulfuron Spire.
Getting to Firelands isn't just about flying in a straight line. Well, it is, but it helps to know exactly where the portal is located so you aren't circling the mountain like a lost dragonhawk.
Finding the Firelands Portal in Mount Hyjal
First things first: you need to get to Kalimdor. If you’re Alliance, you’re likely starting in Stormwind. Horde players are coming from Orgrimmar. Both cities have a dedicated portal hub for the Cataclysm zones. Look for the circular earthen ring area. In Stormwind, it’s on the island behind the Keep. In Orgrimmar, it’s up on the high plateau near the flight master.
Click the portal to Mount Hyjal.
Once you load in, you’ll be at Nordrassil. This is the big tree. Don't get distracted by the scenery. Mount up and fly south. You are looking for a massive, scorched area at the very bottom of the map called the Sulfuron Spire. It’s hard to miss because the entire landscape turns from lush green forest into a literal hellscape of lava and obsidian.
The raid entrance itself is located at coordinates 47, 78 roughly. Look for the giant fortress made of dark iron and fire. There's a bridge leading up to a massive swirling orange portal. That’s your destination.
Why the Location Matters for Farmers
Most players visit Firelands for one thing: Smoldering Egg of Millagazor. It drops from Ragnaros on Heroic or Normal (though most stick to Heroic for the better loot table). Because the raid is an instance, you can only run it once a week per character.
If you have multiple alts, the travel time adds up.
If you haven't unlocked the Hyjal portal yet because you never did the opening quests, you’ve got two choices. You can fly all the way from Orgrimmar or Stormwind (which is a nightmare), or you can just do the intro quest. It takes five minutes. Go to the Hero’s Call Board or Warchief’s Command Board, pick up the quest for Hyjal, and talk to the NPC who teleports you to Moonglade. From there, a green dragon flies you straight to Nordrassil. Just do it. It saves hours in the long run.
Skip the Trash and Save Time
Firelands is a "non-linear" raid for the most part, but you still have to kill the gatekeepers.
You can't just walk up to Ragnaros. You have to defeat Shannox, Beth'tilac, Lord Rhyolith, Alysrazor, and Baleroc first. Only then does the bridge to the Majordomo Staghelm encounter extend. Honestly, Shannox is the most annoying because he wanders around. You usually have to kill a certain amount of "trash" mobs to get him to spawn.

Don't waste time killing every single core hound. Focus on the giants and the larger groups near the central path.
Alysrazor: The Shortcut for Non-Flyers
If you’re doing this on a character that can’t move fast, remember that Alysrazor gives you a flying mechanic. When she takes off, she drops feathers. Pick up three feathers, and you can fly. You can actually use this to zip around the arena or move to the next boss faster if you time it right. It’s a small optimization, but when you're on your 50th run for the mount, every second counts.
Common Mistakes When Traveling to Hyjal
People often confuse the Firelands raid entrance with the Molten Front questing area.
They are right next to each other.
The Molten Front is a phased daily quest zone. The entrance to it is a small cave/portal near the sanctuary. The Firelands raid is the giant, looming citadel. If you find yourself looking at NPCs offering you quests for "Marks of the World Tree," you’re in the wrong spot. Look up. You want the big building.

Another thing. Check your raid difficulty before you enter. If you’re hunting the Flametalon of Alysrazor (the ground mount), it drops on any difficulty. But if you want the fire hawk from Ragnaros, most people prefer Heroic 25-man for the extra gold and transmog drops. You can change this by right-clicking your character portrait before passing through the portal.
Actionable Steps for Your Next Run
- Check your Portals: Ensure the Mount Hyjal portal is active in your faction capital. If not, grab the quest "As Hyjal Burns" from the command board to unlock it instantly.
- Set a Hearthstone: Если you are dedicated to farming this weekly, consider setting your Hearthstone to Nordrassil. It puts you seconds away from the raid.
- Clear the Prerequisites: Remember that you must down the first five bosses before the path to the bridge opens.
- Coordinate Check: Fly to 47, 78 in southern Mount Hyjal. The portal is halfway up the spire, not at the very top.
- Vendor Trash: Empty your bags before going in. The amount of greens and gray items that drop in Firelands is staggering, and it's a decent way to make some raw gold while mount hunting.
