You’ve just crushed the latest set of campaign quests in The War Within. You’re feeling good. You’re ready to see what Xal'atath is up to next, or maybe you just want to finally unlock that Earthen allied race everyone’s talking about. But then you look at your quest log and see those dreaded words: Wait for word from Alleria Windrunner.
It's frustrating. It feels like a bug. You've checked your mail. You've flown back to Dornogal. You've sat in the Foundation Hall staring at Khadgar like he’s going to suddenly start dancing and hand you a purple quest marker.
Honestly, the game isn't very good at telling you what’s actually happening here. You aren't doing anything wrong; you're just hitting the "Time-Gate Wall."
The Real Reason Alleria Isn't Messaging You
Let’s get the technical stuff out of the way first. When the game tells you to wait for word from Alleria Windrunner, it’s basically Blizzard’s way of saying "Content Loading... Please Wait for Next Week."
During the initial launch of The War Within, this message appeared at the end of Chapter 4 of the max-level campaign. Players were left hanging because Chapter 5—the big finale called "A Light in the Dark"—wasn't actually in the game yet. It was locked behind the weekly reset.
But even now, in 2026, players hitting this on alts or during specific patch cycles get confused. Why? Because the "word" from Alleria never actually arrives in your mailbox.
- There is no "Word": You won't get a letter.
- No Pop-up: A window won't just appear on your screen while you're picking herbs in Hallowfall.
- Level Requirements: You must be level 80. If you’re level 79 and 99% experience, she won’t talk to you.
- Renown Gates: Historically, you needed to be Renown 4 with the four major factions (Council of Dornogal, The Assembly of Deeps, Hallowfall Arathi, and Severed Threads).
If you meet those criteria and the game still says to wait, it usually means you need to physically go find her.
Where to Find Alleria When the Quest Bugged Out
I’ve seen dozens of people in trade chat losing their minds because they can't find her. If your quest log is stuck on "Wait for word," stop waiting.
Go to Dornogal.
She is almost always standing at the Coreway (coordinates 42, 27). Sometimes she’s inside the Foundation Hall with the rest of the "A-Team" (Khadgar, Jaina, and the gang), but for the "A Light in the Dark" questline, she’s usually outside looking down into the giant hole in the middle of the city.
If she’s there but doesn't have a quest marker, try logging out and back in. Yeah, it’s the oldest trick in the book, but for the World Soul Saga quests, the phasing is notoriously finicky.
Why the Phasing is a Mess
The game is trying to juggle a lot of "versions" of Dornogal. If you have other quests active—like the "Fate of the Kirin Tor" or the "Lingering Shadows" questline—Alleria might be "phased" into a different spot.
Pro-tip: Finish your other purple (campaign) quests first. If you have a quest to talk to Khadgar about Dalaran’s survivors, finish that. It often clears the "blockage" that prevents Alleria from offering the next main story beat.
Is Alleria Actually "Annoying" or Just Well-Written?
Since we're talking about waiting for her, we should probably talk about why half the player base seems to want to mute her dialogue. In The War Within, Alleria is... a lot.

She’s reckless. She’s obsessed with Xal'atath. She makes mistakes that get people (and cities) hurt.
But if you look at the lore—like the Light and Shadow short or the A Thousand Years of War audio drama—it actually makes sense. She’s been fighting a shadow war for a literal millennium. She’s been listening to the Void whisper that she’s a failure every single second of her life.
When we're stuck waiting for her "word," we're seeing a character who is basically on the verge of a breakdown. She doesn't want to lead a committee. She wants to shoot an arrow through a void-god's eye.
Some players hate this. They think she’s "immature" for someone so old. I think she’s just traumatized. She’s a hunter who lost her home, her sisters (twice, kinda), and her planet. She isn't a patient person, which is ironic because she makes us wait for her for weeks at a time.
What to Do While You Wait
If you’re genuinely stuck behind a time-gate (meaning Blizzard hasn't unlocked the next chapter for your region yet), don't just sit in Dornogal.
- Farm Renown: Most "stuck" players realize later they were just half a level short of the Renown requirement.
- The "Sojourner" Achievements: Go do the side quests in Hallowfall or Azj-Kahet. They give massive amounts of lore that actually explain what Xal'atath is doing while Alleria is "preparing."
- Check your Warband: Remember, progress is shared now. If you finished the campaign on one character, your alts might see a "Skip" option when talking to Thrall or Jaina.
The Finish Line: "A Light in the Dark"
Once the wait is over, the quest you’re looking for is usually "A Tide Needing Turned." This is the big one. This leads to the final cinematic of the launch campaign and, most importantly, is the final checkmark for the Earthen Allied Race unlock.
If you’ve done everything and Alleria still won’t talk to you, check your map for a giant purple exclamation point. In The War Within, Blizzard started using these "Campaign" markers more aggressively. If it’s not in Dornogal, check Silithus. Sometimes the "word" you're waiting for is actually a summons back to the sword.
Basically, stop waiting for a whisper. Alleria isn't going to call you. You have to go find her, and if she's not ready, you've probably got some Renown grinding to do.
The story in the World Soul Saga is being told in chunks. It's not a bug; it's just the new way Warcraft does business. Go hit Renown 4 with everyone, head to the Coreway, and she’ll finally have that quest for you.
Next Steps for You:
Check your quest log for any "Internal" or "Local" story chapters you haven't finished in the Isle of Dorn. Often, the main campaign is "paused" until specific local problems are solved. If you're at level 80 and she's still silent, fly to the Foundation Hall and see if Khadgar has a side quest that needs clearing first.
